Day 1 of the 2022 Bassmaster Classic came to a close with Bryan New clenching the lead with 5 bass weighing in with a whopping 20lb combine weight.  New’s strategy had him fishing almost exclusively boat docks and that’s where all his keepers came from.

“I think there’s a really good chance this tournament could be won fishing boat docks,” said New, “I probably fished a hundred docks today and really caught them off six or seven.

“Those docks may replenish, or they may not, but there are plenty of docks on this lake. It’s not like you’re gonna run out.”

He understands that he can’t only fish around docks if he wants to clench the win at the end of the tournament, but so far this strategy has proved to be very effective.

When asked about the techniques, baits, and strategies he’s employing Bryan clammed up quickly, only eluding that he was using a combination of “slow-moving baits and fast-moving reaction baits.”

Hank Cherry fell to the 41st position with only 12lb total weight, which is not looking good for the 2-time defending champion of the tournament.  Cherry is 8 pounds behind Bryan New and the 1st place slot going into day 2.

Jason Christie is someone to keep your eye on as well.  In two other Classics he has led after Day 1 and Day 2, but he’s never been able to clench the win.  After Day 1, Christie sits in 9th place at 17lbs-1oz and seems to be happy about it saying,

“I’m right where I want to be,” he said. “I don’t want to be leading this.” – Jason Christie
